On August 25th, 2023 Huawei data storage user elite Forum kicked off in Xining. At this forum, Han Zhenxing, vice president of Huawei distributed storage, said that Huawei would insist on promoting the full flash memory of distributed storage, oceanStor Pacific 9920, a new distributed storage All-Flash product, has been released. Its high performance, large capacity, green and low carbon features will accelerate the entry of large amounts of unstructured data into production decision-making systems in all walks of life, improve production decision-making efficiency and business experience.

At present, with the vigorous development of new technologies and applications such as the Internet, 5G and AI, unstructured data is growing rapidly. For example, AI models are evolving from one billion-level parameters to hundreds of billions of-level parameters, from single mode to multi-mode and full mode, which has led to a thousand-fold increase in data scale. The explosion of data also means a sharp increase in energy consumption. According To The GIV report, by 2030, unstructured data will account for 80% of the total annual data generated in the world, data storage accounts for 30% of data center energy consumption. The pursuit of sustainable development in the industry has always been a constant consensus. In order to achieve a greener and lower-carbon development path, reducing the energy consumption of unstructured data storage is crucial to the construction of data centers.

Flash memory storage has the advantages of high performance, low power consumption and high reliability, making more and more enterprises choose flash memory storage for data processing. OceanStor Pacific 9920, a new all-flash product launched by Huawei distributed storage, is unique in terms of high-performance, large-capacity flash disks and efficient data reduction algorithms. It is at the forefront of the full-flash process of distributed storage. Moreover, OceanStor Pacific 9920, as an all-flash memory product, has excellent performance, with a single-node bandwidth of 20 Gb/s and IOPS of 800000. Han Zhenxing said that Huawei's innovative advanced technology in distributed storage has created OceanStor Pacific 9920, a capacity-based all-flash memory product that is inclusive in all scenarios, enabling flash storage to serve all walks of life more and faster.

In the era of pursuing efficiency, high-performance all-flash distributed storage can greatly improve the production decision-making efficiency of large amounts of unstructured data. IOPS, low latency, and throughput are three commonly used storage performance indicators. Based on these indicators, SSD performance is much higher than that of mechanical hard disk HDD, for example, the IOPS of a single SSD is a thousand times higher than that of HDD. SSD also has the advantages of low latency and large throughput, which can better meet the requirements of high throughput and low latency for multiple emerging services, accelerate the efficiency of production decision-making in all walks of life.

In fact, all-flash memory does not mean higher investment. The data reduction technology adopted by Huawei OceanStor Pacific 9920, the higher number of SSD stacking layers, and the QLC/PLC particle type will significantly reduce the single SSD price, the continuous reduction of physical capacity costs will bring end-to-end savings such as CAPEX, space, and energy consumption to customers. In the long run, with a five-year period, the TCO generated by enterprises using SSD will be the same as HDD, achieving a 1:1 capacity replacement. Currently, Huawei supports mass production of 30.72TB of large-capacity flash disks. Huawei will also introduce larger-capacity flash disks and implement data reduction algorithms for typical unstructured data scenarios to further optimize TCO.

Unstructured data has set off a huge wave in the world. How to sail more stably and faster in this wave is a problem that all walks of life are thinking about. Huawei's distributed storage is the first of the times and has firmly and rapidly embarked on the development path of full flash memory. Han Zhenxing said that in this wave of unstructured data, Huawei distributed storage will persist in innovation, help improve the production decision-making efficiency of enterprises, and accelerate the construction of green and low-carbon data centers, it has become an important force to push all walks of life forward.
